Leadership Development
The outdoors are the ideal classroom for developing responsibility and initiative. MLI uses a process called “Empowerment Leadership” to engage students in the development of their own strengths. Each day students are selected to organize and plan the day. This includes everything from setting the schedule to route finding to encouraging the team when things get tough. Each leader is shadowed and mentored by an MLI instructor throughout the day and given a full feedback by the team in the evening. Students are also encouraged to develop and teach classes throughout each expedition. As they teach, not only do they learn the material but they hone their presentation skills. Students will learn creative presentation skills from the entertaining and engaging classes by their instructors. Students will learn leadership theories from theorists around the world and receive a world-class education in setting and achieving goals.
Outdoor Skills
MLI employs individuals with rich experience and certifications in each particular discipline. These instructors teach cutting edge, industry standard techniques that will allow students to know how to thrive in the field. Our goal is that students will develop a foundation that equips them to spend more time in the outdoors and to do so in a manner that is responsible and fun.
On each course, students will participate in classes that teach skills in the venue where they will be directly applied. Theories quickly become practical in this methodology. Students quickly realize that the more they learn, the better they will be able to perform and the more fun they will have. Students also have the option of choosing additional classes and receiving personal coaching to take their skills to the next level.
Environmental Ethics
We believe that this world is too small for us to simply dismiss our connection to all of creation. Rather, we recognize and teach a “living simply” ethic. Leaving no permanent evidence of passage is our benchmark. We also recognize that what we do not know we do not value and what we do not value we do not protect. We aim to engage students with the wilderness so that they will learn to value and protect this incredible heritage. Students will receive and participate in projects and discussions that provide practical applications of living simply both in the outdoors but also in urban environments as well.
Spiritual Renewal (optional for custom courses)
The mountain-top experience is essential for the soul to be able to endure the daily valleys in life. An MLI course holistically challenges students to think outside the typical constraints of urban life and experience true spiritual renewal. The mighty spiritual leaders of history so often went to the mountains to reconnect with God. Students will experience daily spiritual connection time as well as the immersion in and awakening to the amazing artistry of God.
